Mbabane – As the festive season approaches, the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) is urging the nation to prioritise safety, responsible behaviour, and vigilance to prevent avoidable incidents during the holidays.
The Christmas period typically sees an increase in travel across the country, creating opportunities not only for celebration but also for criminal activity. Police warn that thieves often take advantage of the busy season to target unsuspecting individuals and steal belongings.
REPS is cautioning the public about fraudsters, especially as this is the time when organisations and community groups distribute food parcels, donations, and money. PICO Assistant Superintendent Nosipho Mnguni appealed to the public to remain alert and conduct themselves responsibly to ensure a peaceful festive period.
Mnguni emphasised road safety as a key concern, noting that the number of road users and, subsequently, road accidents rises sharply during the holidays.
“We are appealing for everyone to be extra cautious because criminals take advantage when people are focused only on celebrating,” she said. “We urge people to be very careful on the roads as the number of users increases. Whether walking or driving, make sure you use the road correctly, give each other enough space and consideration.”
She further warned the public about ongoing rainfalls, which poses additional dangers such as flooding. Parents were advised to monitor their children closely and prevent them from going near swollen or fast-flowing rivers.
Mnguni stressed that by following basic safety guidelines, remaining vigilant, and observing road rules, the nation can reduce risks and ensure a safe and joyful festive season.
