Maseru – Lesotho has officially introduced personalised number plates, with the launch taking place at the Traffic Offices in Ha Foso on Wednesday, 1 October 2025. The ceremony was led by the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Hon. Matjato Moteane.

Hon. Moteane traced the initiative back to 2014, noting that early attempts faced multiple setbacks. Although Parliament approved regulations in 2017, implementation stalled due to payment requirements for personalised plates. In 2023, high personalisation costs again delayed the programme. The new rollout now allows a maximum of six characters per plate.

The personalised plates come with enhanced security features, including a QR PIN STEP that can be scanned to display both the owner’s and the vehicle’s information.

The Minister also outlined strategies to improve the Traffic Department’s operations, including weekly progress presentations to himself and the Principal Secretary. By November, the Ministry plans to streamline the delivery process for number plates to better serve Basotho citizens.
