Lilongwe, Malawi – Outgoing Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to concede defeat in today’s presidential election at 12 noon, following pressure from the church and former President Dr Bakili Muluzi.

Chakwera, who raised concerns over alleged electoral irregularities, trails far behind 85-year-old former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and has fallen short of the 51 percent required to win. Both the Malawian Electoral Commission and the courts confirmed that even if the irregularities were accounted for, Chakwera would not have secured victory.

The Malawian Electoral Commission is scheduled to announce the official results at 2 PM this afternoon.

State House in Lilongwe confirmed that Chakwera will address the nation from Kamuzu Palace, with the speech broadcast live on the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation and other media outlets.
