Lilongwe, Malawi – The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Malawi has declared victory in the 2025 presidential elections and urged President Lazarus Chakwera to concede. Party officials made the announcement yesterday in Lilongwe, insisting that tallies already show their candidate Peter Mutharika holding a strong lead.

DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba compared the situation to 2014, when then-president Joyce Banda conceded without delay after realising she had lost. He accused Chakwera of embarrassing the country by refusing to acknowledge what he described as “a clear verdict from the people.”

Namalomba dismissed remarks from Malawi Congress Party (MCP) figures, including Jessie Kabwila, saying they were “senseless noise” in the face of results. Senior party official Sameer Suleman echoed this, stressing that “the figures are there for all to see” and insisting that Malawians had decisively chosen Mutharika.

Unofficial tallies published yesterday by Malawi24 showed Mutharika leading with 404,640 votes (63.1 percent) against Chakwera’s 213,676 (33.3 percent) from 30 constituencies out of 229. Dalitso Kabambe of the UTM trailed with 40,164 votes (6.3 percent).

The partial results covered 22 districts, including strong DPP showings in Phalombe, Neno, Mulanje, and Blantyre City. In Phalombe, for instance, Mutharika secured 30,876 votes against Chakwera’s 478. By contrast, Chakwera held ground in Mchinji District, where he collected 21,578 votes against Mutharika’s 3,392.

DPP strategist Ben Phiri urged the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to swiftly address reported challenges such as network glitches and delays in transmitting results. He said such issues are not unusual in an election of this size but insisted the commission must act fast to maintain public trust.

Malawi held the election on 16 September, and with just a fraction of constituencies counted, the DPP maintains that the outcome is already beyond doubt. The party insists that it is now only a matter of time before the electoral body confirms Mutharika as the winner.
