Juba, South Sudan – One of eight men deported from the United States to South Sudan has been repatriated with his family members, the Associated Press reported.
South Sudan which like the Kingdom of Eswatini received deportees from the US is still keeping in custody seven, as it decides what to do with them.
South Sudan’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Apuk Ayuel Mayen said the country will decide whether the deportees will remain in that country or be repatriated elsewhere, stating that the one freed was a South Sudanese national who is now reunited with his family.
There is not much information shared on the US deportations with the countries that have received deportees from the US saying the agreements are based on bilateral talks. There has been opposition from within the countries’ pressure groups demanding to know what they get in return for hosting the US deportees. South Sudan has not communicated information on where exactly the deportees are being held and under which conditions.
Countries that have received US deportees are Rwanda (seven), South Sudan (eight), Eswatini (five) and Uganda, reportedly not yet started as the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case continues.
