MASERU – Lesotho’s Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI) has concluded a national workshop aimed at strengthening data governance and stakeholder engagement.
The closing ceremony took place on 30 July 2025 and was officiated by Principal Secretary Kanono Leronti Ramashamole, who represented Minister Nthati Moorosi. The workshop brought together government officials, policy experts, and civil society representatives to discuss how Lesotho can better manage and exchange data both domestically and across borders.
Ramashamole said the sessions had reinforced the importance of treating data as a national asset, not just a by-product of government operations. He said effective data governance was critical for advancing digital public services, enabling trade, and supporting innovation.
The programme also looked into plans to implement data exchange platforms that would allow for more secure and coordinated movement of data, especially financial information.
Dr. Wairagala Wakabi, Executive Director of the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA), commended Lesotho’s effort to align its data policy framework with that of the African Union. He said data now underpins nearly every sector, including education, innovation, and the economy.
