JOHANNESBURG – Chinese automaker Omoda has entered the high-performance SUV market with its new C9 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), claiming power and speed levels usually reserved for hot hatches. Tested on Friday, 9 July 2025, the C9’s on-road performance delivered a striking 0 to 100km/h sprint in just 5.16 seconds, outpacing the VW Golf 8 GTI’s official time of 5.88 seconds.

Mark Jones, Road Test Editor, recorded the figures during test runs, placing the C9 as one of the quickest family SUVs under the R1 million mark. The C9 pairs a modest 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine producing 105kW and 215Nm with a large 34.5kWh battery powering four electric motors—one for each wheel. This combination generates a total system output of 440kW and 915Nm, sending power through a three-speed DHT automatic gearbox to all four wheels.

The C9 was recently showcased at the Durban July and other exclusive events, building a reputation as a luxury lifestyle SUV. However, road tests show the vehicle’s raw performance matches its glamorous image, with power surges placing it ahead of many traditional sport models.

There were concerns during testing, including inconsistent launch responses and occasional glitching, with the vehicle failing to maintain peak performance on every run. One instance saw the car limit itself to 120km/h unexpectedly.

On fuel efficiency, the C9 PHEV recorded an average of 6.8 litres per 100km over the testing period, despite frequent high-speed runs. Omoda claims a battery-only range of 150km, though real-world tests achieved around 100km per charge. The model supports 70kW fast charging at public stations, going from 30% to 80% battery capacity in 25 minutes, or a full home charge in five and a half hours.

Braking performance drew criticism, with the vehicle’s electronic brake feel making low-speed driving uncomfortable, especially for passengers.

The C9 is priced at R999 000 and comes with extensive after-sales support, including a seven-year/100,000km service plan, seven-year/200,000km vehicle warranty, and a 10-year battery pack warranty for the first owner. Despite some electronic quirks, the Omoda C9 PHEV offers a competitive package for buyers seeking luxury, tech, and high performance in a family SUV.
