Government continues to channel funds to the refurbishment of the Somhlolo National Stadium to meet the laid-out Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.
For Phase II of the stadium rehab, E35 000 000 funds have been made available in the 2024/2025 financial year as reflected by the budget estimates released by the Ministry of Finance. In breakdown E10 000 000 will be used for the VVIP hospitality area, E9 000 000 for a sewer line and toilets, E3 000 000 for a bigger Media Room, E2 000 000 for a VIP gate, E3 000 000 for Giant Screens on both ends, E2 000 000 for a Backup Generator, E1 million for retractable tunnel, and E5 000 000 for professional fees and contingencies.
After the completion of the Phase II work, CAF is expected to do check ups and possible give the green light for the country to host category A CAF matches. The most affected in the continued Somhlolo National Stadium upgrade has been the senior national team Sihlangu when playing World Cup qualifiers or Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and teams participating in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup as these matches are referred to as Category A by the continent’s football governing body.
