MOMO Cup play-offs postponed

PLE Chairman with MTN FinTech Eswatini Sam Shongwe

Mbabane-The much-awaited MTN Fintech, MoMo Cup has been postponed to October 22 due to security concerns at the King Sobhuza Memorial Stadium in Nhlangano. The games will now be held at the Mavuso Sports centre.

The Mobile Money (MoMo) Cup Management committee has also requested the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) to reschedule the third  weeks fixture which was set down for 22nd October 2022 in light of this postponement.

The cup committee also encouraged fans to vote for the final fixture as the voting lines open at midnight.

Meanwhile voting continues for the three seeded teams in order to determine who they will clash with in the quarter finals.

After the official closing of the MOMO Cup voting lines, fourteen National First Division and Twelve Premier league teams will share a whoping E260 000.

Article 4 of the MoMo Cup Rules and Regulations, clearly states that all Premier League clubs that will reach 2 000 votes at the end of the voting exercise will each receive E10 000 as the participating fee during the price presentation ceremony.

The article also states that National First Division teams also stand to pocket the same amount, if they reach 1000 votes.

In the Premier League only Royal Leopards and Tambankulu Callies failed to reach the target. Royal Leopards only managed to amass 173 votes whilst Tambankulu Callies 1153.

The sponsor, MTN Fintech and Premier League of Eswatini had anticipated 100 000 votes but the teams had other plans, as on the last few hours of the voting the teams jumped from a less than 100 000 votes to over 200 000 votes, which was double the anticipated votes.

The voting exercise in the MTN FinTech Eswatini-sponsored MoMo Cup left the so called big three teams stunned as none of them were in the top three.

The big three are Mbabane Highlanders, Mbabane Swallows and Manzini Wanderes, and they all failed to cast enough votes to maintain their semi-final spot in the MoMo Cup.

Swallows suffered a setback after they literally failed even to qualify to play in the tournament whilst  Manzini Wanderes and Mbabane Highlanders will be forced to sweat it out in the play offs with two other teams in Denver Sundowns and Manzini Sea-Birds respectively.

There were also surprises during the MOMO Cup Voting. A first division team Rangers F.C and Premier League rookies Nsingizini Hotspurs occupied number two and three respectively. Moneni Pirates  topped the whole lot.
