Mbabane: The country’s national Under-20 team need only a draw or a win at the very best to qualify for the COSAFA Under-20 Championship semi-final.
This follows Angola’s emphatic 4-0 win against Botswana on Sunday afternoon. Eswatini face-off with the Young Zebras on Tuesday in the deciding game after beating Angola 1-0 in the opening match of this three-team group on Friday courtesy of a Majahasibili Ndlovu of Manzini Wanderers strike.
The game against Botswana is scheduled for Wolfson Stadium in a 12.30pm kick off. South Africa is hosting the tournament in the Eastern Cape city of Port Elizabeth.
As it stands, Angola are tied on three points with Eswatini with the former top of the standings thanks to a better goal difference.
The tournament is also the first qualifying round for the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia in 2021 as the finalists will qualify for the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, to be staged Mauritania where the semi-finalists will see themselves qualify for the World Cup.
The 2020 COSAFA U-20 Cup is the 27th edition of the COSAFA U-20 Challenge Cup, an international youth football tournament open to national associations of the COSAFA region. It started on 3 December and will finish on 13 December in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.
Initially planned to be hosted by Mauritius, the competition was later shifted to South Africa after Mauritius withdrew as hosts due to the COVID-19 regulations. The matches are played at Port Elizabeth (Wolfson Stadium and Gelvandale Stadium).
