Mbabane: The possibility of a local side playing South African heavyweights Orlando Pirates have been smashed as there will be no Total CAF Confederation Cup representative for Eswatini.
Following the CAF inter-club competitions draw in Cairo, Egypt on Monday, Eswatini representative in the tournament were to face Angola side GDSE in the preliminary round with the winner securing a date with Pirates in the first round.
The news were confirmed by Football Association (EFA) Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe.
“The country will only be represented by Young Buffaloes in the CAF Champions League and we have no name for the CAF Confederation Cup slot,” he said.
Effectively, this means GDSE of Angola will get a bye and will face the 1995 CAF Champions League winners in the first round batch of matches.
Usually, winners of the Eswatini Bank Cup get a ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup but the tournament was only in the quarterfinals when the previous season was bought to a halt by Covid-19.
Buffaloes on the hand have been paired against Burundi outfit Le Messager. Buffaloes will host the first leg between November 27-29 with the return leg scheduled between December 4-6, 2020.
The winner will face Democratic Republic of Congo giants AS Vita Club in the first round.
