- Mabuza has been subjected to solitary confinement after he was found in possession of two cell phones in his prison cell
Mbabane: The Peoples United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO) has condemned the Department of Correctional Services for placing incarcerated Member of Parliament (MP) Mduduzi “Bacede” Mabuza under solitary confinement at the Matsapha Maximum prison.
Mabuza is reported to have been subjected to solitary confinement after he was found in possession of two cell phones during a periodic random search on his person and cell on December 19, 2021. This means that Mabuza is now being kept in a single cell with no contact with other inmates and is only allowed one visitor.
In a statement the PUDEMO’s spokesman, Wandile Dludlu called “on the international human rights bodies like Red Cross, Amnesty International, Southern African Human Rights Defenders Network and Pan African Parliament to urgently consider an investigation on the condition and treatment of the MP.”
Mduduzi Mabuza of Hosea has been imprisoned with fellow parliamentarian Mthandeni Dube of Ngwempisi. The two were arrested in July 25, 2021, and charged with contravening the Suppression of Terrorism Act. Mabuza also faces an additional charge of breaching the Covid 19 regulations.
Also linked to these two arrests is the involvement of their colleague, Siphofaneni Member of Parliament Mduduzi “Gawuzela” Simelane who is also wanted for the same charges. Simelane however, has been able to evade arrest and as such has been labeled as a fugitive from the law.
Dludlu has called “for the immediate release of Mduduzi Mabuza from solitary confinement.”
