Mbabane: Shocker!

Members of Parliament were shocked to learn that a pupil who passed with flying colours in 2017 from Lusoti High School never attended classes and was never in any list of pupils for that year.

This damning news were revealed by the report that was delivered by the select committee that was tasked to probe the Examination Council of Eswatini (ECESWA) after numerous allegations of maladministration, corruption, fraud and fabrication of results.

The report was debated in the House of Assembly on Monday where these news emerged as the Chairman of the committee Khubuta MP Musa Mabuza was making his submissions regarding the work of his committee. According to the report, submissions that were made by Gugu Mtsetfwa-Gumbi who is the Subject Officer at the Exams Council, before the committee, the whole scenario transpired when scripts for four schools went missing they were marking.

Gugu Mtsetfwa-Gumbi told the committee that she developed an interest in the matter because, seemingly all managers at the Exams Council were clueless on what might have happened to the scripts, yet they were the ones who were supposed to be kept abreast on such unfortunate developments. Mtsetfwa-Gumbi submitted it is still a mystery as to where the marks allocated to those children came from.

According to the Exams Council’s schools’ results of 2017, Lusoti High School had two top students who made it to the top 50 of the best performing students. The first pupil ranked number 19 while the second pupil came number 33.

Lobamba MP Allen Stewart stated that the verification and validation process of the results which was unclear would lead to reluctance by tertiary institutions to accept students possessing the certificates.

Motshane MP Robert Magongo said Lusoti High School had pupils who demanded that their papers be remarked and to their surprise, they passed with flying colours
