Mbabane: Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini has this morning received E46.6 million from the European Union that will go towards a food assistance program to counter the effects of COVID-19.
Speaking during the donation at the Cabinet Offices, Dlamini said the support will not go through government but will be channeled through Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross and World Food Program (WFP). Dlamini said through this gesture Emaswati will get food and cash assistance for an extended period and the national food security will be stabilized. Dlamini said the support will add to the already on going food assistance programme which has already benefited over 330 000 Emaswati.
European United Ambassador Esmeralda Hernandez Arogones said this assistance is part of the bigger support the EU is providing to the COVID-19 response in Eswatini which amounts to E1.4 billion covering multiple sectors of the society. Arogones said when the project is implemented it will run for the next eight months.
“It is earmarked to reach out to approximately 230 000 households and will involve cash-based transfers (CBT) and provision of food parcels to the most insecure populations.” Arogones said.
