Mbabane: The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) under the Anti-Narcotics Unit will destroy dagga worth over E4 million this month. Part of the illicit herb was destroyed on Monday at Pigg’s Peak in the presence of Pigg’s Peak Principal Magistrate Phathaphatha Mdluli.
On Monday dagga exhibits that were destroyed by the force led by Inspector Sipho Mamba were worth close to E2.5 million from Lubombo and Shiselweni regions while Manzini and Hhohho regions will follow on June 15 and 17 respectively. Dagga exhibits that were confiscated from the Shiselweni region were worth E1.5 million weighing 2 661.34 kg while those from Lubombo region were worth E836 064 weighing 1 393 kg.
Dagga exhibits awaiting destruction from Hhohho region are said to be worth over E1 million weighing 1 694.34kg and from Manzini region they are said to be weighing 1 330kg with a street value of E798 384. All of this illicit herb will be destroyed on June 15 and 17.
Arrests have been made by the police from all the regions, totaling up to 617 people, of which 73 of them are from Shiselweni region, 159 from Lubombo, 210 from Hhohho and 175 from Manzini region.
On another note the police service have destroyed 94 volumes of GT cigarettes and 200 volumes of Pine Change cigarettes, all confiscated from Shiselweni region. The cigarettes are reported to have made their entry from Mozambique and they were estimated to be worth E58 000.
