Mbabane – For the very first time, the Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) awarded licences to seven postal and courier service providers.
The seven applicants are now fully licenced postal and courier service providers and this comes after the recent adoption of the new licence framework and the Postal and Courier Guidelines, 2021.
The companies are Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (Eswatini Post), Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (Phutfumani Couriers), DHL Express Swaziland (PTY) Ltd, Eliang Courier Services (PTY) Ltd, FEDEX Courier (PTY) Ltd, Interfreight (PTY) Ltd and Triton Express (PTY) Ltd.
ESCCOM Chief Executive Officer Mvilawemphi Dlamini said the issuance of new licences in the sector will assist in issues such as competition, and the supervision will lead to an improved quality of service and fair prices for the consumer.
“We are grateful to all the applicants being licensed here today for their valuable input as we developed these frameworks to guide your operations culminating to today’s event. I would like to emphasize that these licences come with heightened responsibilities. These require that you thrive to deliver your services based on speed, agility, efficiency, real time tracking and foremost being innovative to differentiate yourself from your competitor”, he said.
Dlamini added that the commission was currently in the process of establishing a national addressing system which shall go a long way in enabling ease of conducting their business. He encouraged the companies to partake in the project which will bring immense benefits for the country and the enablement of eCommerce.
“We want to purchase goods online and have you deliver them at our door step, however without a proper addressing system that cannot happen in Eswatini,” he added.
The Commission did not only grant licences to the seven companies but it also renewed and handed over six General Electronic Communications Services Licences. The licences were granted in May 2017 for the provision of Internet Services and were valid for a period of five years.
The licences were granted to Computronics Systems (PTY) Ltd, Dimension DATA MEA (PTY) Ltd, Ironstamp Investments (PTY) Ltd, Jenny Internet Swaziland (PTY) Ltd. SwaziSat (PTY) Ltd and Touch IT Investments (PTY) Ltd.
