Mbabane: Newly appointed senator, Jimmy Hlophe, said it is tormenting that some young parliamentarians are the source of disorder in the August House. Hlophe said he should not be misunderstood to be referring to the country’s Parliament but that across the world it is common knowledge that young legislators do not give in easily.
Hlophe was talking to this reporter after he had been elected into the House of Senate after amassing 40 votes of the 31 needed. He replaced the late Mike Temple who died untimely at his home in Malkerns on June 1, 2020. Hlophe’s contender, Bongani Matsebula got 30 votes.
Hlophe said parliamentary workshops were not an option but a necessity so that legislators can treat the August House deservingly, as an honorable institution.
Noteworthy is that in some countries, parliamentary sessions are often disrupted due to detached understanding on issues. The neighboring South Africa is one country that is known for occasional chaos, with members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) being the most vociferous.
Hlophe prayed that such does not happen in Eswatini and that all ended up with mutual understanding. Hlophe, who is not knew to Parliament, said Eswatini is known for respect and order and such should be upheld at all times. Hlophe served in the 8th Parliament.
