Convicted former legislator Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza has pinned the hopes of reuniting with his ‘beautiful wives’ on presiding judge Mumcy Dlamini. The polygamist presented the longtime, almost three years, in which he has not had contact with his two wives as one of the mitigating circumstances. The court heard how prison restrictions have made life unbearable for Mabuza inside prison. He told the court that the toughening of his prison conditions has not been easy to his wives and family. He expressed his wish to reunite with his wives. ” The system at the correctional facility is torturing to suspects charged with terrorism. It is not just torture for the suspects but for the entire family, they make sure that by the time you get to leave you are mentally handicapped. So, when you get to taking your decision on the sentence, my Lady, please also consider that it has been a long time since I had contact with my beautiful wives,” he said, to the amusement of the court. His remarks somehow seemed to trickle the fancy of the presiding judge, who also in jest responded to say the former legislator could be spot on with the ‘beautiful wives’ card as it has previously worked with late businessman Boy Motsa, when a magistrate indicated he would acquit him of his charges because he had a beautiful wife. In his plea for leniency to the court, Mabuza also said he had forgiven all those behind his perceived persecution but remained resolute about his innocence. Mabuza was convicted of terrorism related charges, including others of murder. We are yet to hear what the prosecutors are looking for in terms of the sentence. Today, Mabuza’s co-accused Mthandeni Dube is expected to make his own submissions in mitigation of sentence
