Today, Monday June 1, neighboring South Africa has opened its economy despite a rather difficult fight against the novel Coronavirus compared to Eswatini. South Africa has had 0.055 percent of its population contracting the virus that has killed hundreds of thousands across the globe compared to Eswatini’s 0.025 percent infection rate.
The population of South Africa stands at an estimated 59.3 million while Eswatini has 1.136 million citizens.
Eswatini had a confirmed 285 (0.025 percent of the population) cases on Sunday, May 31 with South Africa on 32 683 (0.055 percent of the population).
Eswatini has an impressive 66.3 percent recovery rate as 189 people from the total 285 that have tested positive are now negative while South Africa’s recovery rate stands fairly at 51.4 percent. In the SADC biggest economy, 16 800 people have recovered from the 32 683 that tested positive by midnight May 31.
With 683 deaths recorded by South Africa, its death percentage stands at 2.1 while Eswatini has a far better 0.7 percent. South Africa reopened the economy today, moving to Level 3 of a five-tier lockdown that started March 27. Under Level 3, high risk sectors of the economy like mining will be allowed to reopen along places of workship.
Liquor sales will resume, albeit home consumption and mines will return to full capacity.
