EZULWINI – The Minister of Information Communication and Technology has seen the need to intervene in matters of fraud, mobile market scams, cyber bullying, exposure to inappropriate content and online predators, through the initiative themed “ Asiphepheni, Secure Our World’’ and has partnered with Eswatini Communication Commission (ESCCOM).
The minister during the launch stated that globally, cyber threats and attacks are rising exponentially, with more severe consequences. In response to this scourge, the government launched, the Eswatini National Cyber security Strategy 2022 – 2027 that outlines a national framework, detailing a comprehensive approach to achieving a safe, secure, and resilient cyberspace. Every stakeholder, from government agencies to private sector partners and civil society, is expected to play their part in fulfilling our country’s vision. Together, we can build a secure digital environment that supports our national development goals. His Majesty’s Government is quite aware of the digital assets the country owns, both in the private and public sectors, and is not willing to leave these at the risk of cyber-attacks.
“As Eswatini its imperative that, we consider the effects of such a transformation and have policies and strategies that regulate and coordinate matters of cyber security by enforcing standards applicable to the security of critical information infrastructure. The enactment of three pivotal laws in 2022: TheComputer Crime and Cybercrime Act, theData Protection Act, and the Electronic Transactions Act was a step in the right direction. These laws underscore our government’s steadfast commitment to securing Eswatini’s digital space. They provide a robust legal framework to combat cybercrime, protect personal data, and facilitate secure and legitimate electronic transactions. The completion of the necessary regulations is fundamental to stand competently and robustly for law enforcement at any time.
The chief executive (CE) Mvelawemphi Dlamini for ESCCOM shared that ‘fraud and mobile market scams were the most reported cybercrimes in 2024 and MTN and Eswatini Mobile have reported significant losses’. For that very reason it has proven compelled the Minister of ICT take extra measures in ensuring that such cases are dealt with to enable safety of the people. He further mentioned that in 30 days to come, ESCCOM, as cyber security agency will be educating individuals, the youth and organizations on protecting sensitive data from cyber threats like phishing attacks, malware and identity theft.
