Mbabane- The keynote speaker at the Women’s Economic Empowerment seminar at Hilton Garden Inn Dr Thando Khumalo also made an emphasis on the importance of economically empowering women. “Women’s economic empowerment is both the right thing to do and a smart investment. Equality of opportunity allows women to make the choices that are best for them, their families and their communities. When women have more opportunities, not only are their rights guaranteed, but the economy does better too. We know from evidence that greater equality leads to increased productivity and stronger economies, which benefits not just women, but all of society, reduced poverty and advancing SDGs GOAL 5. IMF estimates that empowering women could add $28 trillion in GDP growth by 2025. Also, addressing legal barriers to women’s economic participation and increasing access and control to capital, land and technology could boost inclusive growth. Such initiatives as the UN Women’s work on enhancing women’s access to markets, finance, and skills” she said.
Dr Thandi Khumalo is a Senior Sociology lecturer at UNESWA and was the keynote speaker at the seminar and launch for Eswatini Trends and Opportunities to Advance Gender Equality hosted by the World Bank
