ESERA puts solar applications online

Manzini – Businesses, farmers and households seeking to generate their own electricity from renewable energy can now apply for Embedded Generation through a new digital platform introduced by the Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA).

The platform was launched during the Eswatini International Trade Fair (EITF) 2026, giving customers, installers, the utility and the regulator a common online space to access information and follow the Embedded Generation application process.

ESERA Chief Executive Officer Skhumbuzo Tsabedze said the platform would make it easier for more people and businesses to participate in the country’s shift towards cleaner energy.

“We are not simply launching a digital platform. We are launching an enabler of Eswatini’s energy transition,” Tsabedze said.

He said the platform would improve transparency and accountability while cutting down on administrative work and making the application process easier for customers.

Tsabedze said applicants would also have a clearer route to follow when seeking approval to connect their electricity generation systems to the grid.

Presenting the platform, Megan Euston-Brown of Sustainable Energy Africa (SEA) said making the application process clear and predictable was important in encouraging investment in Embedded Generation.

She said businesses, farms and households needed to know the requirements, rules and stages involved before deciding to invest in their own electricity generation systems.

The platform provides applicants with information on the requirements and steps involved in applying for Embedded Generation, while allowing the different parties involved in the process to access the same information.
