Mbabane: Citizens of Mkhuzweni community were left in shock shells when members of the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) fired gun shots to disperse young boys who were found playing soccer in a local soccer field.
A source known to these publication which name is deliberately withheld, said a group of more than twenty boys were alleged to have been playing soccer. It is said that when they saw two police vehicles approaching them, they ran for their lives and gun shots were fired in the air. However it was not ascertain whether the shots was live ammunition or rubber bullet.
A similar incident happened about a month ago as it was reported by one of the local publications where a young boy was left injured in the Shiselweni Region after they were found by the police playing soccer while the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini have suspended all sporting activities due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
When sought for comment, REPS Communications Officer Superintended Phindile Vilakati told this publication that there was no formal report brought to her office pertaining the incident. Vilakati said normally police dispersed people who are found playing soccer during the suspension of football due to COVID-19.
