Manzini – The City of Manzini has introduced the ‘walk to work’ initiative, a new campaign encouraging residents and workers to adopt walking as part of their daily routine. The programme was unveiled yesterday by Manzini Mayor Wesley Dlamini during a media briefing at the Regional Administrator’s Office.
The initiative is the first of its kind in the city and seeks to promote healthier lifestyles, ease traffic congestion, and improve environmental conditions. Mayor Dlamini said walking offers a practical way for citizens to stay fit, manage stress, and reduce lifestyle-related health risks that continue to rise in urban areas.
He noted that thousands of people travel into Manzini daily, forming the backbone of the city’s commercial activity, and their well-being is essential to the local economy. Encouraging walking, he added, supports both productivity and long-term public health.
The campaign is part of the city’s six-year Integrated Development Plan, which prioritises cleaner and safer streets, better air quality, and a community that embraces active living. The council envisions a city where pedestrian-friendly spaces and green areas contribute to a more pleasant urban environment.
Dlamini also acknowledged Regional Administrator Chief Prince Gija Dlamini for supporting the campaign and AMICAALL Eswatini for providing expertise in health promotion and community outreach. He encouraged businesses and institutions to allow employees to participate by walking at least once a week.
