Africa’s first-ever Youth Olympic Games has taken a major step forward with the unveiling of Ayo, a lion mascot symbolising courage, pride, and the continent’s youthful spirit ahead of the 2026 Games in Dakar, Senegal.
Unlike previous unveilings that focus solely on design, Ayo’s launch has been celebrated as a rallying call for African unity and sporting ambition. The mascot’s introduction comes as Eswatini and other African nations intensify preparations to send athletes to the historic event.
Mkhulisi Dlamini, Media Officer of the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA), said Ayo’s symbolism resonates deeply with African athletes.
“Ayo is more than a mascot it’s a reminder that Africa is ready to lead, compete, and inspire on the world stage,” he said.
Depicted wearing a traditional Tingandé hat, Ayo reflects Senegal’s cultural heritage and the vibrancy of African youth. The mascot’s unveiling marked exactly one year before the Games begin, setting an energetic tone for the continental celebration of sport and unity.
The Dakar 2026 Games are expected to attract thousands of young athletes from across the globe. Eswatini’s contingent will compete in various sporting codes, as the country joins the continent in preparing for a landmark moment in African sports history.
