Mbabane – The new Jaecoo J5 SUV from Chinese carmaker Chery has arrived in Eswatini, offering buyers a city-focused vehicle at a competitive price. The entry-level Vortex model is priced at E369 900, with the Glacier and flagship Inferno trims retailing at E419 900 and E479 900 respectively.
The Jaecoo J5 is the brand’s second SUV locally, following the larger J7. Unlike its more rugged sibling, the J5 is designed for urban driving, with 174mm ground clearance, a sleeker exterior and no heavy cladding. All three derivatives feature a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 115kW of power and 230Nm of torque through a CVT gearbox.

Inside, the SUV offers a premium feel with minimal hard plastics, a 13.2-inch infotainment screen, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, and a centre console with just three buttons. Standard across the range are 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, electric side mirrors, a reverse camera, and a four-speaker sound system. Higher trims add leather seats, LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, advanced safety systems, wireless charging, and ventilated front seats.
For lifestyle users, the J5 comes with a Karaoke Mode and an optional dog ramp for pet owners. The rear cabin provides ample legroom and 480 litres of boot space, catering to small families and urban commuters alike.

Omoda and Jaecoo have built a reputation in the region for affordable yet feature-rich vehicles. The J5 includes a five-year/75 000km service plan, a five-year/150 000km warranty, and a 10-year/1-million km warranty for first owners, making it a strong contender in the local SUV market.
