EZULWINI – Ubombo Sugar Limited walked away with top honours as the country’s biggest taxpayer during a glitzy awards ceremony hosted by the Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS) on Friday evening.
The event, held at Happy Valley Hotel in Ezulwini, brought together top government officials, business leaders, and tax administrators to recognise companies that consistently meet their tax obligations.
Ubombo Sugar’s Finance Manager, Philile Nxumalo, accepted the award on behalf of the company and said their success was built on a strong commitment to paying taxes and following national laws.
Among the special guests was African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) Executive Secretary Mary Baine, who praised Eswatini’s rising levels of voluntary tax compliance. She noted that the country’s compliance rate had grown from 61% to 66.6% over the past year, describing it as a sign of improving cooperation between citizens and government.
Baine also commended ERS for rolling out digital tools like TaxEase and the TaxPal mobile application, which now allow taxpayers to file returns and make payments at any time of day. She added that improvements in customs processing through e-Customs systems were helping to speed up trade.
Companies from various industries were awarded for their tax compliance, including construction giants Inyatsi Construction, Mormond Electrical Contractors, Toepfer & Sons, and Mgcabho Construction.
The lively celebration featured live performances from musicians Zamo Dlamini and Sands, who entertained guests, among them Finance Minister Neal Rijkenberg.
ERS Commissioner General Brightwell Nkambule applauded the business community for supporting national development through tax contributions. Nkambule said the ERS would continue to expand outreach programmes such as Bafundzise and Sondzela S’khulume, which focus on tax education and debt collection.
