NGWENYA – A 28-year-old man from Ngwenya has been sentenced to 12 months in prison or a fine of E1,500 after being found in possession of dagga at the Ngwenya Border Post.
Bhekani Dlamini appeared before Magistrate Xolile Nxumalo on Monday, following his arrest on Saturday, July 5. He was charged under Section 7 read with Section 8(1) of The Opium and Habit-Forming Drugs Act No. 37 of 1922, as amended.
Court documents revealed that Dlamini, who was driving a red Isuzu LDV registered HJ 60 TV GP, was stopped by police officers conducting routine checks at the border. During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered 2.6 kilograms of dagga concealed inside.
Dlamini reportedly admitted to owning the drugs and told police he had bought the dagga from someone in Ngwenya with plans to sell it.
The magistrate considered Dlamini’s status as a first-time offender and his show of remorse before handing down the sentence.
