MBABANE – An alleged moment of kleptomania landed a 27-year-old man 20 hours of community service.
Siyabonga Malaza of Sandla was sentenced by the Senior Magistrate Sifiso Vilakati at the Mbabane Magistrate Court on Friday to 20 hours of community service after pleading guilty to theft.
Malaza was found guilty of stealing groceries. According to the charge sheet, he was arrested after unlawfully and intentionally stealing a pack of baked bacon and smoothies valued at E75.00.
The incident occurred on June 26, 2025, at Shoprite Supermarket, located in Swazi Plaza in the Hhohho region.
During mitigation, Malaza told the court that he resorted to stealing because of hunger.
He further explained that his brother, with whom he resides, is currently unemployed, and they are both struggling to make ends meet.
In his judgment, Magistrate Vilakati sentencing him said Malaza will assist with cutting overgrown grass around the Mbabane Magistrate Court.
