KHUPHUKA & GILGAL – Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla has officially opened refurbished classrooms at Mampempeni Primary School under Gilgal Inkhundla and Ekuphumuleni High School in Khuphuka Inkhundla, marking a key milestone in Eswatini’s ongoing recovery from the devastation left by Cyclone Eloise in 2023.
The classrooms are part of restoration works carried out at four schools affected by the tropical storm. The other two—Mndlunkhulu Primary and Lwandle Primary—also benefited from the rehabilitation project. The initiative was coordinated by the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) with support from the African Union Commission through its Humanitarian Affairs Division, in partnership with the Bureau of the Permanent Representative Council Sub-Committee on Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons and Micro Projects.

Dladla, during the handover ceremonies, urged the school communities to care for the infrastructure for the benefit of future learners. At Mampempeni, she called on the Regional Development Fund to repair the school’s borehole to ensure the return of a stable water supply, while NDMA continues to truck in water. The school also received four staff houses and new ablution facilities.

During her visit to Ekuphumuleni, Dladla announced government’s plan to establish a consumer science classroom at the school, aimed at equipping learners with hands-on life skills. She also delivered food parcels to all four schools involved in the rehabilitation—consisting of maize, dried fruits and noodles—and encouraged school garden expansion with crops such as beans and peanuts to support nutrition.
NDMA provided 150 chairs to Mampempeni and Ekuphumuleni. An additional consignment of 150 desks is expected at Ekuphumuleni next week.
