World Down Syndrome Day 2025 was commemorated at Ekwetsembeni Special School in Eswatini, bringing together government officials, education representatives, and disability advocacy groups to strengthen the message of inclusivity. Hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and development partners, the event aimed to enhance support for individuals with Down Syndrome.
The event featured expressions of gratitude towards the Acting Prime Minister and the Minister of Education for their dedication to supporting vulnerable populations and improving educational resources. The Regional Education Office representative called individuals with Down Syndrome “wonderful creatures with special and wonderful needs,” emphasizing their value within society.
The Head Teacher at Ekwetsembeni Special School recognized the crucial role of parental care and thanked the Ministry for providing essential resources. The teachers’ representative discussed the fundamental needs of students, stressing the importance of love, play, and happiness in their development.
Advocacy groups, including the Eswatini Down Syndrome Association and FOSDWA, reinforced the need for inclusive education. The Disability Act 2018 was cited as a crucial step, and the call for increased government investment was echoed.
Minister of Education Owen Nxumalo expressed commitment to expanding school resources, highlighting the resilience of people with Down Syndrome and the ongoing guidance of the Deputy Prime Minister. The United Nations representative commended the collaborative efforts to foster inclusivity.
Acting Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla concluded the event by announcing the theme, “Improve Our Support Systems,” stressing the importance of vocational training, community awareness, and technological support in creating a more inclusive Eswatini.
